Thank You for  Walking with Us!

After 8 years, the volunteer committee for Sebastopol Walks has decided to take off the old hiking shoes and call it a day. Over these years, we’ve organized and conducted about 100 walks around town, with more than 3,000 participants. We are pleased to have introduced people to the fun of exploring our town together on foot and discovering what makes Sebastopol such a great place to live.

The inspiration for the walks was a booklet called Sebastopol Walks, its first edition funded by the City. For the second edition, Sarah Gurney organized two dinner walks and raised enough moneyseb_walks_2 for printing. Funding for the third edition came from the sales of the book, most of which were at our local Copperfields Books. The store recently sold copy 1000.

The main planners for these walks were Richard Nichols, who wrote Sebastopol Walks and led many walks; Kathy Oetinger, who did great work on flyers; Geoffrey Skinner, who came up with new routes and created the website; and Council Member Sarah Gurney, our best advocate. There were other volunteer leaders at various times and we thank them, as well as our sponsors, the City of Sebastopol, Chamber of Commerce, Sebastopol Area Senior Center, and Cittaslow Sebastopol. Most importantly, thanks to all of you who came out to enjoy our walks—you made it worthwhile. Although we are ending the monthly event, we will occasionally plan a walk. The best place to find out about walks is at right here at Sebastopolwalks.org. Finally, if anyone would like to plan or lead group walks, the committee is ready to train and offer some assistance. Just drop us a line and we’ll be happy to talk. Farewell, and continued happy walking about Sebastopol.
